16 Acres of Paris

Just a quick post today. The City of San Francisco is asking for public input on the proposed Balboa Reservoir development site. There is a meeting tonight, Tuesday, May 5th (details here).

My idea: Let’s reuse the best parts of Paris — the parks, narrow streets, and mixed-use buildings. With that pattern, the 16-acre site could fit 1000-1500 new dwelling units.

This is a great spot to promote human-scaled, car-light development. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Balboa Park BART. Downtown is a 10 minute train ride away.

A perfect Idea! While they’re at it they should fill in the outer Sunset and Richmond districts like that too! I came to appreciate the sprawl of those neighborhoods, but there’s just no room for that kind of waste of space now. If SF wasn’t becoming essentially a gated community then it wouldn’t really matter. But if nobody but the super rich is allowed to consider moving to a city, how much sympathy can one have towards the preservation of neighborhoods like these?
